Ingredient Spotlight: Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5)

Ingredient Spotlight: Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5)

April 19, 2020

Panthenol, a natural substance widely known as pro-vitamin B5, is rarely featured as a star ingredient in skincare. However, thanks to its hydrating, moisturizing, soothing and anti-inflammatory effects on the skin, it is widely recognized by the skincare community to be one of the best skincare ingredients.

Let's take a look at what it can do for the skin!

As a humectant, Panthenol attracts water, penetrates the lower skin layers, infuses water into skin cells, and thus helps to retain moisture deep within the tissue.

Contrary to other humectants, Panthenol is also an emollient, which means it can keep water locked in. It also helps stimulate cells that boost skin barrier function, thus helping the skin maintain its softness and elasticity.

This formula, suitable for the most sensitive skin, targets dehydrated skin with Saccharide Isomerate, long-chain Sodium Hyaluronate and Panthenol to provide long-lasting hydration while forming a protective layer on the skin surface to lock in moisture and prevent trans-epidermal water loss. It is also fortified with Organic Masterwort Leaf, Butterfly Bush, White Genepì and Mallow Extract for powerful moisturizing, soothing, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, anti-irritation and healing actions.

Panthenol has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effect on the skin, reducing itchiness, irritations and redness for dermatitis skin such as eczema, and helping the skin defend itself against external stressors.

Panthenol activates the proliferation of cells, in particular dermal fibroblasts, that are important for wound healing and scar treatment, thus is great for post-treatment skincare, i.e. after lasers, tattoos, or chemical peels. The skin healed with the aid of Panthenol tends to be softer and more elastic.

Besides increasing the number of cells, activation of fibroblasts in the dermis, the middle layer of the skin where wrinkles form, also increases synthesis of all components of skin matrix, such as collagen, elastin and glycans. Which means with continued use, Panthenol can improve wrinkles and fine lines.
