While we have all heard about Jojoba Oil, do you know what it actually does for the skin? In fact, did you know it is technically not an oil?
Thanks to its skin-friendly properties and a vast array of nutrients, this humble ingredient can provide our skin with many amazing benefits. Here’s everything you need to know about this skincare hero!
Unlike other oils like sunflower seed oil and argan oil that are triglycerides, jojoba ‘oil’ is actually a wax ester extracted from the seeds of the jojoba plant. Wax ester, a mixture of long chain esters (97–98%) of fatty acids and fatty alcohols, are a main component of the sebum our skin naturally produces, which means it acts and functions like our own sebum, and thus is extremely skin friendly, making it suitable for all skin types, be it dry, sensitive, or acne-prone.
Rich in vitamins A, B, D, and E, essential fatty acids, amino acids, minerals like zinc, selenium and copper, and powerful antioxidants, as well as naturally antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antimicrobial, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory, jojoba oil provides many skin benefits.
Since the molecular structure of jojoba oil is very similar to our own sebum, it adds moisture where it is needed most, whilst balancing the skin and preventing the overproduction of sebum. Also, it also won’t clog pores or cause acne, and is thus great for all skin types, even oily and acne-prone skin——in fact, because of its microbial properties, it helps reduce acne!

People with eczema, psoriasis and rosacea usually have a compromised skin barrier, meaning their skin can’t retain moisture and efficiently block out allergens and bacteria. Jojoba oil can help soothe these skin conditions by adding the much needed lipids back to the skin and restoring a healthy skin barrier. Being a natural anti-inflammatory, it will also help bring down redness and itchiness.

Jojoba oil is rich in vitamins and antioxidants, and when combined, can help slow down and prevent premature aging of the skin. It’s also rich in amino acids, the building blocks of collagen. This means with regular use, you will be able to see a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as improvements in skin texture, tone, and elasticity.

Because of its skin-compatible properties, jojoba oil is able to penetrate through the epidermis and all the way down to the skin matrix. This essentially means, when combined with active ingredients like retinol, niacinamide, and sodium ascorbyl phosphate, it can help pull these ingredients deep into the skin along with it, making them work more efficiently.

Native Americans have been using jojoba oil for its wound healing properties dating as far back as the 1400s. Thanks to its antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as its high antioxidant content, jojoba oil can bring down inflammations, reduce redness, itchiness and pain, and speed up wound healing.

Many makeup and pollutants are oil based, and thus cannot be completely removed with water based cleansers. This is where an oil cleanser comes in, as oil dissolves oil. However, note that not all oils can be used to remove makeup——for instance, coconut oil is comedogenic, thus shouldn’t be used for makeup removal. Jojoba oil, with a lightweight and non-greasy texture, as well as its skin-friendly properties that does not clog pores, is excellent for removing makeup whilst soothing and protecting the skin.
