  • Krill are shrimp-like crustaceans that may be one of the most abundant multi-celled organisms on the planet. They are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids——alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which the body can only get from food or supplements, but are a critical part of the membranes surrounding each of the cells in the body, and are vital for body energy levels, as well as the heart, brain, blood vessels, lungs, immune system, and endocrine system.

While fish oils also contain EPA and DHA, krill oil, has the advantage of having a lot of phospholipids, which help the body better absorb omega-3s. Krill oil also offers vitamin A and antioxidants, namely astaxanthin.

The benefits that Krill Oil provides include:

    1. Fights Inflammation
High in omega-3 fatty acids like docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid that have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, Krill Oil can significantly reduce levels of inflammatory markers in the blood, thereby lowering the risk of chronic disease, slowing aging, improving skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, rosacea and acne, and protecting against certain autoimmune conditions.

    2. Improves Skin Health, Acne and Hormonal Acne
Studies have found that supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids found in Krill Oil can reduce inflammatory and hormonal acne by 42 percent, as it can stimulate the production of eicosanoids, which regulate inflammation and restore hormonal balance. It is also effective in moisturizing the skin and maintaining the skin's natural moisture barrier, which helps to prevent dryness and maintain hydration. They have also been shown to block the production of a specific molecule involved in inflammation, subsequently improving condtions like atopic dermatitis, eczema, psorasis, and rosacea.

    3. Stimulates Collagen and Elastin Synthesis
Studies show that the EPA and DHA in omega-3 fatty acids can promote the production of collagen and elastin, which helps to improve wrinkles and fine lines, as well as bones and connective tissue health.

    4. Improves Heart Health
The omega-3 fatty acids Krill Oil contains have been shown to decrease risk of heart disease and improve cardiovascular function by increasing HDL (good) cholesterol levels, lowering heart rate and blood pressure, decreasing high triglycerides and reducing the risk of coronary heart disease.

    5. Supports Brain Health
Omega-3 fatty acids in Krill Oil can help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, slow cognitive decline, and may even be beneficial for ADHD, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

    6. Supports Strong Bones and Joints
Studies have shown that the omega-3 fatty acids found in Krill Oil could help preserve bone density and reduce the inflammation that contributes to bone and joint pain, as well as osteoporosis, rheumatoid and arthritis.

    7. Increases Good Gut Bacteria
Krill Oil is a prebiotic, meaning it is an excellent source of food to bacteria in the gut and helps promote good gut bacteria. while keeping bad bacteria in check.

Whilst, Astaxanthin, naturally found in Krill oil and often dubbed the "king of carotenoids" is a kind of fat-soluble carotenoid that research shows to be one of the most powerful antioxidants in nature. Its ability in protecting the cells from free radicals and oxidative stress is found to be 6,000 times higher than vitamin C, 550 times higher than vitamin E and 40 times higher than beta-carotene. Note that natural astaxanthin, from krill oil for instance, is 20 times more effective at eliminating free radicals than synthetic astaxanthin.

Its wide array of benefits include:

    1. Enhances Immune System
Asthaxanthin can influence the immune system, helping to activate white blood cells (T-cells) and natural killer (NK) cells so the body can work at a faster speed to stop invasions that can weaken health.

    2. Supports Cognitive Health
Carotenoids protects the brain and reduces the risks of neurodegenerative diseases. As Astaxanthin is a smaller molecule, it can cross the blood-brain barrier and add protection for the brain as well as other body organs. In fact, research shows astaxanthin can increase the formation of new brain cells and enhance spatial memory, which may help to prevent Alzheimer's disease and other cognitive disorders and/or slow their onset rate.

    3. Supports Healthy Heart Function
Astaxanthin can help to lower total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol while also increasing HDL (good) cholesterol and lower high blood pressure. In addition, it can protect against atherosclerosis, which is the buildup of fat and cholesterol in the arteries.

    4. Reduces Inflammation
Chronic inflammation can contribute to conditions like diabetes, celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, heart disease, as well as skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and eczema. Astaxanthin acts on reactive oxygen species, including one specific marker of DNA damage that could potentially translate to disease later in life, and reduce proteins that can cause inflammation, thereby reducing markers of inflammation in the body.

    5. Supports Healthy Vision
Study has shown that astaxanthin helps protect retinal cells against oxidative damage, as well as reduce symptoms of eye fatigue.

    6. Protects Skin from UV Damage
Astaxanthin accumulates in the epidermis and dermis layers of the skin, and helps to block UV penetration and reduce existing damage, thereby slowing and preventing photoaging.

    7. Improves Skin Aging
Study has found that ataxanthin can improve wrinkles, age spots, skin texture and moisture content of the skin.

While fish oil also contains omega-3 fatty acids, thanks to its higher absorbability, and its astaxanthin content, Krill Oil is considered to be superior to fish oil.
