As they say, our eyes are the window to our soul, and also the highlight of our makeup. Unfortunately, because the skin around the eyes is only 0.5mm thick (the skin on the rest of the face is on average 2mm thick) and doesn’t produce oil like the rest of our face, it is especially susceptible to signs of aging like wrinkles and fine lines, making us look 10 years older.
Now, aging is nothing to be frightened of. It is inevitable, and a privilege denied to many; however, premature signs of aging can be slowed and even prevented with the right daily habits and suitable skincare products.

Eye wrinkles are the result of both genetic predispositions and lifestyle factors. As we age, we naturally lose collagen and elastin, and when combined with continuous UV and free radical exposure, the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines may be accelerated.
The collagen and elastin may be further broken down by poor nutrition, smoking, rubbing and tugging of the eyes, removing makeup harshly, frowning and squinting, sleeping mainly on one side of the face on a pillow, nothing sleeping enough, excessive dryness, and so on.

We are what we eat, so first of all, stop eating junk food, sugar, and instant food. Instead, opt for foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, protein, amino acids, antioxidants, and minerals. Doing so will give our body what it needs to plump up the skin, fight potential damages, slow collagen and elastin breakdown, repair itself, and regenerate, thereby reducing and preventing wrinkles around the eyes.
Also try to avoid diuretics like alcohol and excessive caffeine. They can dehydrate the skin, which then lead to fine lines and dry lines around the eyes.

While there is a lot of talk about blue light, let us tell you, the damages it causes is minuscule when compared to UV radiation from the sun. With that being said, a lot of people tend to miss the eye area when applying sunscreen. So remember, don’t forget to carefully apply sunscreen around the eye area everyday too! In addition, lightweight serums that target photoaging can also be applied around the eye area to boost protection and regeneration.

There are a few ingredients that are great for targeting eye wrinkles. For instance, clinical studies have discovered that soy and rice peptides, found in soybean and rice bran proteins, stimulate collagen and glycosaminoglycans synthesis and fade areas of UV-induced pigmentation, which help reduce fine lines, undereye dark circles, puffiness, and boost hydration level as much as 35% after 8 weeks of usage. As an antioxidant, they also have the ability in reducing inflammation and oxidative damage.

Retinol is another excellent ingredient for eye wrinkles. One of the few potent anti-aging ingredients that is widely recognized by both the dermatological and scientific communities, this star ingredient not only activates collagen and epidermal growth factor receptors, promotes cellular turnover, and stimulates self collagen and elastin production. By increasing collagen and elastin production, it can help thicken this thin skin and improve and prevent fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes.

Free radicals damage the skin by triggering chronic inflammations, as well as breaking down the collagen and elastin fibers in the skin. Although invisible to the eyes, this gradually slows down our skin’s natural rejuvenation process, and appears on the skin in the form of dryness, loss of elasticity, wrinkles, and other signs of aging. It is therefore critical to replenish the eye area with plenty of antioxidants from different sources, thereby preventing oxidative stress and skin cell damages, and allowing our skin to heal and repair itself.

First of all, cleansing is important, but extra care must be taken when we are cleansing around the eyes, especially when removing makeup. An oil-based cleanser dissolves eye makeup much better than a water-based cleanser——rather than continuously rubbing and massaging, simply soak a cotton pad with an oil-based cleanser, put it on the eyes for 30 seconds to dissolve the makeup, then gently wipe outward to remove the residue.
Secondly, resist the urge to rub the eyes. More often than not, our eyes itch because of foreign matters like eyelash and dust. Just use a mirror, and gently get rid of it instead of trying to rub it out. If the skin around the eyes is itching, simply lightly dab your finger tip a few times to get rid of that itchy sensation. Your eyelashes will thank you too!
Thirdly, by sleeping mainly with one side of your face on a pillow, pressure is applied over and over again at the same spot, causing collagen to breakdown faster, i.e. if you tend to sleep on your left, your left eye is likely to have more fine lines and wrinkles. So try to sleep on your back, and use a silk pillowcase which will at least cause less friction.
Fourthly, just stop frowning and squinting!
And most importantly, sleep! We don't really have to tell you that now, do we?
