We all know avocado, which is high in healthy fats, fiber, multivitamins cofactors and antioxidants, is good for health. When taken internally consistently, this superfood also works wonders to give you supple, glowing skin. Just look at how Lee Dong-hae, the 34-year old Super Junior member known to love avocado, seems to be aging backwards with skin that makes even us girls jealous.
As it turns out, avocado oil is amazing for the skin when applied topically too!
Derived from avocado, avocado oil is rich in vitamins A, B3, B6, C, D, E and K, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, potassium, magnesium, sodium, copper, folic acid, lecithin, carotenoids, phytosterols, and antioxidants like lutein. When applied topically, it can provide five major skincare benefits, bringing you healthy, radiant skin.
That is not to say you should just apply a random avocado oil on your face though. While being organic, unrefined, and cold-pressed are important, factors such as where it is from, the maturity of the fruit, how it is conserved, how it is incorporated into a skincare product along with other ingredients and at what concentration, all determine how beneficial it is to the skin.

The powerful anti-inflammatory properties of avocado oil are shown to reduce and prevent inflammatory conditions like eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, and acne. Not only does it soothe irritations, redness, itchiness and swelling, it also helps wounds and scars heal faster by speeding up skin cell renewal.

Studies have shown that avocado oil inhibits lysyl oxidase activity, which in layman terms, means it decreases the pathways that break down collagen. As a result, soluble collagen content in the skin significant increases. Other studies have also shown that it increases collagen density, a result of the action of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids present in avocado oil. So what does this all mean? Less wrinkles and plumper skin!

Oxidative stress causes mitochondrial damage within the cells, resulting in fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity. Thanks to its high content of antioxidants, avocado oil helps fight free radicals and protects the skin from UV and environmental damages, which in turn slows such aging process, keeping the skin supple and firm.

The bioavailable lutein helps to keep the skin moisturized and hydrated by preventing the breakdown of important skin lipids and increasing the skin’s water content. Whilst, monounsaturated fatty acids, lecithin, potassium, etc., deeply nourish dry, irritated and damaged skin, maintain skin moisture, support elasticity, and stimulate circulation.
The special thing about avocado oil is that it is also a natural humectant. This means besides nourishing the skin, it also pulls water into the skin and keep it hydrated!

With a SPF rating of 4 – 15, avocado oil acts as a natural sunscreen to help protect skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Studies have also shown that the polyhydroxylated fatty alcohols within avocado reduce UVB-induced damage and inflammation in the skin.
