5 Main Skin Benefits of Squalane

Home   The Journal   5 Main Skin Benefits of Squalane

February 17, 2021

Squalene is a colorless poly-unsaturated hydrocarbon liquid that is naturally found in human sebum, as well as many animals and plants, for lubrication and protection. In human skin’s lipid, it accounts for approximately 10-16% of the skin's lipid. However, our skin produces less squalene with age, and the distribution of lipids in the skin becomes uneven. Just like a dam with a damaged gate, water cannot be locked in, which means no matter how much hydration you give the skin, it will still feel dry.

In the past, squalene was mainly extracted from shark livers, but not only does this greatly harm the poor animals, but because of pristine, a known allergen, it may also cause sensitivity in some skin. This is where squalane, which is mostly derived from olives, comes in.

Benefits of Squalane

1. Highly Compatible with Human Skin

As it is a component of our natural sebum, squalane penetrates the upper layers of the skin easily, whilst pulling other ingredients in the formula with it deep into the skin for higher performance and absorption. It is also therefore suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and acne prone skin.

2. Hydrates & Soothes

In addition to effectively nourishing the skin, squalane also helps to strengthen the skin's natural lipid barrier to reduce moisture loss caused by evaporation, thus reducing dryness and cracking skin.

3. Antibacterial, Anti-Inflammatory, Anti-Irritations

Studies have found that squalane contains antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-irritation properties, which helps relieve redness and inflammation and protects the skin against allergens and pollutants, and therefore it is particularly suitable for various inflammatory skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, rosacea, and inflammatory acne.

4. Fights Free Radicals, Slows Aging

Squalane is abundant in antioxidants, which helps to fight and neutralize free radicals to slow signs of aging, such as wrinkles and fine lines. The antioxidant properties of squalane also helps protect against lipid peroxidation, a process that damages skin’s surface and pore lining, thereby preventing pores from enlarging.
