Rich in antioxidants and nutrients, green tea is highly recognized for its many positive health benefits. Over the years, studies have also shown that it exhibits a wide range of therapeutic properties for the skin when used topically, thanks to its polyphenols, vitamins, tannins, flavonoids, and six different types of catechin content, including epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and epicatechin gallate (ECG), which have potent antioxidant properties.
While they come from the same family, white tea is rarer than green tea (and more expensive) as it is a minimally processed type made from unopened buds and immature leaves, and thus retains a higher quantity of antioxidants. It also has more powerful anti-elastase properties, which slow down the break down of collagen and elastin.
Matcha, on the other hand, is grown and prepared differently than regular green tea, which gives it a higher chlorophyll, amino acids and antioxidant content, especially EGCG. One study found that Matcha contains up to 137 times more antioxidants than a low-grade variety of green tea and up to 3 times more antioxidants than other high-quality teas.

Numerous studies have proven that EGCG, polyphenols, flavonoids in green tea, can help repair DNA damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) rays, rejuvenate dying cells, prevent melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer, and slows signs of aging, such as wrinkles, sagging, and pigmentation. They also have an inhibitory action on collagenase, a collagen-reducing enzyme known to break down collagen, thereby increasing skin’s firmness and elasticity.

With its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, the tannins and polyphenols in green tea also help reduce sebum secretion, as well as fight against infection by damaging bacterial membranes and controlling bacterial growth. This makes green tea a perfect remedy for acne and oily skin.
