We all know that vitamin D can impact health in many ways. As it turns out, it also hugely impacts the skin in terms of its health and ageing process. However, due to poor diet, and lack of exposure to sunlight (including the increased usage of sunscreen), around 80% of people are actually deficient in this sunshine vitamin.

Vitamin D deficiency can lead to poor immune function, which weakens the skin barrier, increasing dryness and chance of infections. Increased inflammation then worsens skin conditions such as acne, eczema, rosacea and psoriasis. In fact, vitamin D has been shown to be more effective than vitamin E at reducing lipid peroxidation.
In addition, numerous studies have also demonstrated that vitamin D influences skin aging. Telomeres in the DNA shorten with age, and the lower vitamin D level the skin has, the shorter the telomeres, and the older the skin looks. The fact that vitamin D deficiency can also speed up the collagen glycation process should also not be overlooked, as it can greatly affect the skin’s structure at the cellular level, resulting in wrinkles, loss of elasticity, stiffness, dullness, etc.

Besides consuming supplements and foods rich in vitamin D, studies have been shown that applying vitamin D-rich skincare ingredients topically, such as reishi, shiitake, black truffle, cordyceps, and alfalfa, can hugely benefit skin’s health, in terms of increased immune function, reduced inflammation, protection against UV-induced cellular damage, detoxification, and regulation of genes important for cellular aging.
